Foolish Things is a true story that took place over the course of a fifteen year period, beginning on Christmas day, 2007, when an ordinary Christian couple was called by God to work with the youth on the streets of the inner city of Easton, Pennsylvania. The book recounts the many ups and downs of working with a troubled neighborhood, plagued with drugs, guns, gangs, violence and fatherlessness.
There are many poignant moments of simple encounters with the youth who live in the neighborhood, and also moments where Dean and Val came face to face with violent situations.
The main takeaway from Foolish Things is that in God’s timing, and with His grace, miracles happen and lives are transformed. It is the story of a couple called to plant seeds, and who sometimes questioned if their efforts were bearing fruit. This is the story of God’s desire to use regular people to do extraordinary things.
The title of the book comes from the scripture 1 Corinthians 1:27 which says “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and the weak things to shame the strong.” And based on that scripture, Foolish Things recounts the stories of inner-city kids who were surly not meant to amount to much. But as He promised, God showed up in big and little ways and showed those kids that they were born with a purpose, and that they are loved beyond measure.
